Leaving the planet in better condition than we found it.

Any suggestions for planting around a mature Norway Maple? The roots are exposed near the surface and the ground is bare under the canopy.

The root system of silver maple also has large roots near the soil surface and we have had some success over the years with growing the following beneath t hem. Sweet woodruff, wild violets, Hosta, and other shade species. You may have to puzzle out exactly where the deeper soil between the larger roots are in order to plant some of them but its not hard. In 2015 we took out our gigantic silver maple but did not have the stump ground out. Instead it is being used as a planter for  pineapple sage and African basil. The large roots are still there but now the plants being among them are grown are sun loving annuals and bulbs.
