Great opportunity for someone to rent land/share house for a growing season (April - Oct) to try out organic farming and permaculture techniques. Could be a permanent setup too.
Due to family situation (father in nursing home in Chicago), I can only be on my land a couple of weekends a month. So for the price of a house/land share (negotiable), is more of a full rental situation. I will possibly holding some workshops and events on the weekends.
Land is 26 acres - 9 acre valley - has been used for cattle pasture in the past with Walnut grove. 3 acre hay field has young orchard and asparagus. Front 2 acres needs to be keylined. 13 acres of wetlands with access on a private fishing lake (Carter Lake). In negotiations for additional 9 acre flat perennial hay field. Soil is sandy. In process of redoing fencing for horses.
Buildings consist of totally renovated farm house with 3 bedrooms, 2 bath with large deck. Small cedar cabin at top of hill for workshops or camping. Large metal pole barn with attached sheds - could be converted to horse stalls. Wooden Hay barn.
Location is 110 miles from downtown Chicago - 30 minutes from South Bend/Notre Dame - 15 minutes from Elkhart with hotels, 24 hr shopping - 5 minutes from Union, MI (gas station, grocery store). 10 minutes from tollway.
Property is over a fresh water aquifer - was home to native American mound builders (Hopewell/Goodall) and a site for water blessing ceremonies. Wildlife - sandhill cranes, whooping cranes, wild turkey, deer etc.
I am a Midwest Permaculture 2008 graduate. Looking for 1-2 people who are energetic and honest. I need to give approval on any permanent changes, but annual organic farming is fine. Priority given to permaculture graduates. Horse, chicken, key line, solar, green house, high tunnel, rocket stove heater, biochar experience would be great. No smoking in the house. No hunting.
